All Authority in Heaven and Earth
Last night, well after dark, I went outside to enjoy a beautiful evening. Christy was inside working while I lounged in the hammock looking at the stars in the dark sky. At first, there were only a few. As my eyes adjusted to the absence of light, more stars appeared. Picturing myself and my hammock in the perspective of a huge earth and an incomprehensibly large universe, I felt very small.
My mind went back to the resurrection text again for more lessons. Much like more stars appearing the longer I gazed into the sky, more truth is revealed as I spend more time taking in God’s Word. In Matthew’s account of the resurrection Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples…baptizing them…teaching them…and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20). Does the One to whom all authority in heaven and on earth has been given really need me to do His work? My reaction is, “Not really.” However, He makes it completely obvious that regardless of whether or not He needs me, He definitely wants me. Either way, I am amazed.
Imagine receiving a call from the White House inviting you to serve in the President’s cabinet. What an overwhelming privilege! Hearing God’s call to service in His Kingdom can feel just as overwhelming even though the privilege may be clearly recognized. Our performance, though, is not based on our ability. The One who has all authority in heaven and earth is the One calling. He provides what is needed and, as we will learn this coming Sunday morning, is even doing the work. My task is to simply respond in obedience to His call. Do not fear the task to which God is calling you. He, who has all authority, is on it! Respond and watch Him work.
Blessings,
Pastor Gary

David said it all: I saw God before me for all time. Nothing can shake me; He's right by my side. I'm glad from the inside out, ecstatic; I've pitched my tent in the Land of Hope. I know You'll never dump me in Hades; I'll never even smell the stench of death. You've got my feet on the life-path, with Your face shining sun-joy all around.
