Familiar Acts

After Jesus left the two with whom He had traveled on the road to Emmaus they ran to tell the disciples. “Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread” (Luke 24:35). As I read this passage again, a simple thought occurred to me. The level of intimacy that had to have been present in their relationship with Jesus prior to His death in order for them to recognize such an ordinary, simple gesture as breaking the bread must have been very close. They saw a familiar gentleness and confidence in the breaking of the bread like they had seen in their friend and teacher.

Married couples experience this kind of intimacy. A husband recognizes and anticipates the smallest of gestures by his wife. It does not happen, however, the moment a ring is placed on her finger. It occurs after significant time has been spent watching, listening, and learning. Knowing the small things communicates a love that is deep enough to notice and a keen interest in knowing all there is to know.

We should be reminded that our relationship with the risen Christ is no different. We are in a life-long relationship with Him. The more time we spend with Him the more we know Him and the easier it is to recognize His work around us and respond to His voice. Practice His presence and see what you can learn from Him today.
