Going to War with a Marshmallow Gun

Last year I stumbled upon a great design for a marshmallow gun. I bought large quantities of PVC pipe and provided instructions for my students to assemble it. Once they got the hang of it, all-out war erupted on the patio! The boys soon discovered that they could not inflict pain on the girls with a marshmallow, but figured out how to gross them out instead. Putting the marshmallow in your mouth before loading it into the gun causes it to stick to its target. Despite having a mess to clean up no damage was done and everyone had a great time.

I thought about that as I read a passage of Scripture from Matthew today.

The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver (Jesus) said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first. “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.”

They never had a clue with whom they were messing, did they? They may as well have gone to war with a marshmallow gun. If death and the grave were to be no match for Jesus then an armed guard and royal seal meant absolutely nothing. There is no power on heaven or on earth with authority over Jesus Christ. He absolutely secured that position with His resurrection.

So be encouraged one more time. There is no need to fear even the worst the enemy has to offer because Jesus is forever victorious. Just like the three Hebrew children said to Nebuchadnezzar, “O Nebuchadnezzar…if we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up” (Daniel 3:16-18). That’s trust!
